TÜİK's Report on Social Media
The Turkish Statistical Institute's (TÜİK) 2013 "Survey on Information and Communication Technology Usage in Enterprises" offers up-to-date data on how widespread social media, technology, internet, computer and web use are. TÜİK: Social Media Is Used Most for Building Image and Promoting Products. According to the survey, 95.3% of enterprises that use social media applications make use of social networks. Social networks are followed by blogs and microblogs at 39.3%, multimedia-sharing sites at 35.9%, and "wiki"-based knowledge-sharing sites at 11.4%. For purposes of use, promotion, image-building and product marketing activities take first place at 77.5%. Other examples and rates of social media use were reported as follows: receiving/responding to customers' views, suggestions and complaints (57.3%); exchanging views and sharing information between enterprises (38.5%); involving customers in product development/innovation processes (36.9%); staff selection/recruitment (28.9%); collaborating with business partners and other organisations (24.8%). The survey also shows that the proportion of enterprises with internet access fell in 2013: from 92.5% in 2012 down to a measured 90.8% in 2013. That said, internet access among enterprises with 250 or more employees in Turkey reaches as high as 98.8%. The survey also makes clear the role the internet plays in enterprises' business activities. There has been a steady rise in internet access and computer use since 2005. Ownership of a website has seen periodic rises and falls over the same period, with the proportion of enterprises owning a website falling back to 53.3% in 2013. The survey also holds data on what proportion of enterprises take orders for goods and services via a website or Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). The findings show that 10.1% of enterprises took orders for goods and services via a website or EDI in 2012, a figure that varies to 21.6% for enterprises with 250 or more employees, 12.6% for those with 50–249 employees, and 9.2% for those with 10–49 employees.
