Google's 2014 Consumer Barometer Report and Turkey

Google has published its 2014 Consumer Barometer report. Alongside detailed information on consumers in 46 countries, 12 graphs specifically on Turkey caught our attention. Built by pooling social media, internet and online-shopping data from around the world across different devices and demographic filters, the report stands out for its striking detail.

One striking detail in the report on internet habits in Turkey is that social media use has reached around 92% — the highest level in the world — and, given its potential, is expected to move further into online shopping soon.

It's not yet clear how this will shape near-term trends in the Turkish market, but the data makes plain just how deeply the internet has become woven into everyday life, in Turkey and around the world.

While social media use hovers around 40% globally, Turkey sits at record levels. Looking at time spent online, in a society that seems to be permanently connected, 84% of 16–24 year olds use the internet. That figure is 77% for the 25–34 age group, dropping to 62% for the 35–44 group. The statistics prove just how at ease we are as a nation with technology.

The research, which also lets you drill into data country by country, lays bare how often people in Turkey go online: according to the report, 54% of the population goes online more than once a day.

Another striking figure from Google's 2014 Consumer Barometer report concerns how potential customers gather information about a product before buying. In research on the tendency to watch a promotional video about a product before purchase, carried out across Eastern Europe and South America, Turkish consumers ranked second — at 22% — behind only Romania.

Looking at smartphone usage rates, there's a rising trend since 2012: from 14% in 2012 up to 39% in 2014. 32% of users buy their smartphone online — a small detail that, in fact, says a great deal about the importance of e-commerce in Turkey.

We do very thorough research online before buying any product. 37% of users carry out that research through their smartphones.

Google's 2014 Consumer Barometer Report, which made plenty of noise as soon as it was published, looks set to open up new horizons not only for academic researchers working in marketing and social media, but also for investors hunting for new markets in world trade.
